BUFFALO, NY – The Mid-American Conference announced its postseason soccer awards on Friday afternoon, with five University at Buffalo women's soccer student-athletes earning postseason recognition, highlighted by junior Lexie Thompson who was named Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season. Thompson also earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team. Joining her on the first team is graduate student defender Frederique St.-Jean and graduate student forward Jasmine Guerber, while senior midfielder Sarah Woods received All-MAC Second Team honors. Additionally, Adriana Victoriano earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
The Bulls are tied with Western Michigan with three first team honorees. This is the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Bulls have received a specialty award and had multiple players on the first team, and the five total All-MAC selections are tied for the second most in program history.
"It's so great for these five to be honored with all-conference recognition," said head coach Shawn Burke. "It is a testament to their body of work and consistency throughout the season. We are fortunate enough to see it every day and I'm glad that the conference can see it too."
Thompson is the only player in MAC history to win Goalkeeper of the Year in back-to-back seasons and the first Bull to win a specialty award in consecutive seasons. The Bulls have now won Goalkeeper of the Year in three of the last four years. The Levittown, NY native has compiled a 12-4-2 overall record and ranks in the top 30 nationally in goals against average (.68) and shutouts (8) while also recording a .813 save percentage and 53 saves across 18 contests. She currently ranks first in program history in career goals against average (0.70), third in shutouts (21) and fourth in wins (27).
"There aren't enough superlatives to describe Lexie and what she means to this team," said Burke. "Her training habits, attention to detail and her desire for greatness has elevated her to this league's premier goalie."
St.-Jean was named to the All-MAC First Team for the second straight season. The Montreal, Quebec native rarely came off the field for the Bulls this season, playing all but 50 minutes and making her impact known on both ends of the field. Starting in 15 games for the Bulls, St.-Jean was a major factor on set pieces, recording a goal and putting pressure on opposing defenses by creating several chances in the box for herself and her teammates. She is also the anchor of a standout backline that ranks in the top 20 nationally in goals against average (.67) while also ranking in the top 35 in the nation in shutout percentage (.500).
Guerber earns First-Team All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. She is enjoying a breakout season in which she has already recorded a career-high five assists, while also closing in on career-marks in goals (7) and points (19). The Montreal, Quebec native leads the MAC in shots (57), shots on goal (26) and game-winning goals (4) and ranks in the top five in goals, assists and points. She took it up a notch in league play, recording a goal or an assist in seven of 12 games.
Woods receives Second-Team All-MAC recognition for the first time, bookending her decorated career with postseason awards after being named to the All-Freshman team as a rookie. She is enjoying a solid senior campaign in which she has started all 18 games for the Bulls and has tied a career-high with four assists while also scoring the game-winning goal in UB's win at Ohio.
Victoriano earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team after a solid rookie campaign. The Setauket, NY native has made an immediate impact in her first season in the blue and white, appearing in all 18 games and earning 15 starts while recording a pair of goals on the season. This marks the 11th time in the last 12 seasons that the Bulls have placed a rookie on the All-Freshman team.
The third-seeded Bulls take on No. 6 Bowling Green on Saturday at 1pm in the first of two quarterfinal matches at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
