BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo football team dropped their first Mid-American Conference game of the season to Akron, 24-16, at UB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was a defensive battle early on as the Zips held a 3-2 advantage late in the second quarter. UB first points came courtesy of Jonathan Capo when he, after a botched snap on an Akron punt attempt, was able to tackle the punter in the endzone for a safety.
The Bulls took the lead with nine seconds left in the first half when Ta'Quan Roberson found Patrick Clacks III for a 1-yard touchdown and then connected with Marcus Velez for the two-point conversion to put the Bulls ahead, 10-3.
The touchdown was set up by linebacker Red Murdock who forced and recovered a fumble at the Akron 16-yard line with 21 seconds left in the half. It was Murdock's 16th career forced fumble, tying former UB great Khalil Mack for the NCAA record for career forced fumbles.
Akron tied the game, 10-10, early in the third quarter.
Set up by a long completion from Roberson to Nik McMillan, the Bulls regained a 13-10 lead on a 21-yard field goal by Jack Howes.
The Zips scored 14 unanswered points to take a 24-13 lead.
The Bulls were able to get another Howes' field goal midway through the fourth quarter to cut the lead to eight. However, UB turned it over on its final two possessions to allow the Zips to hold on for the victory.
The Zips forced five Buffalo turnovers in the game, while the Bulls were able to turn Akron over three times. Safety Jalen McNair had his second interception of the season in the second quarter.
Roberson threw for 266 yards and a touchdown in the game but did toss four interceptions. His favorite target was McMillan who had eight receptions for a career-high 177 yards, including three catches of 45 yards or more. Victor Snow had seven receptions for 56 yards.
Murdock led the defense with 13 tackles, 1.5 sacks and his fifth forced fumble of the season. Dion Crawford had eight tackles and a tackle for loss. Malin White had seven tackles and two tackles for loss.
The Bulls are back in action next Saturday at Bowling Green.
