BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo football team played their most compete game of the season to defeat Bowling Green, 28-3, at Doyt Perry Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Big plays on offense, defense and special teams helped the Bulls improve to 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play.
Buffalo wasted little time getting on the board as Al-Jay Henderson ripped off a 41-yard touchdown run on the fourth snap of the game. It was the start of a big day for Henderson who rushed for a season-best 119 yards and eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for his career.
The Bulls jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter when Victor Snow took a handoff and raced around the edge for a short touchdown run. The score was set up by a 39-yard completion from Ta'Quan Roberson to Nik McMillan. It was another big game for McMillan who had eight catches for 105 yards – his third straight 100-yard receiving game.
The Bulls were able to tack on a third touchdown, in the waning seconds of first half, thanks to a history-making play by Red Murdock. The graduate linebacker forced a fumble that was recovered by Jalen McNair and returned to the Bowling Green six-yard line. It was Murdock's 17th career forced fumble, giving him the all-time NCAA FBS record for career forced fumbles, previously held by UB great Khalil Mack.
Leading 21-0 at the half, the Bulls kept the pressure on to start the third. After forcing a Bowling Green three-and-out, Snow made history of his own when he returned the ensuing punt 65 yards for a touchdown. It marked the first time since the 2015 season a UB player returned a punt for a score.
The 28 points were more than enough thanks to a stellar game played by the defense. The Bulls held the Falcons to just 216 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers. In addition, UB had six sacks and nine tackles for loss in the game. On three separate occasions in the first half, the Bulls stopped the Falcons on fourth down.
Murdock had a game-high 13 tackles and added 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Mitchell Gonser added 10 tackles. Devin Morgan had his best game as a Bull with five tackles and two sacks – both career highs. Oliver Bridges had his first career interception for the Bulls.
The Bulls are back in action at Central Michigan on Nov. 12.
