Bulls Take Delayed Opener over Albany

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo football team held off a feisty UAlbany squad, 21-17, in the season opener at Broadview Stadium on Thursday night. The start of the game was delayed for over two and a half hours due to lightning and torrential downpours. The game finally kicked off at 9:43 pm.

Once the game commenced it took some late-game heroics from the Bulls to pull out the victory. Chance Morrow caught his third touchdown of the night to put the Bulls ahead, 21-17, with 4:53 remaining in the game.

Then, with the Great Danes having a first-and-goal at the UB one-yard line, the Bulls defense stepped up and made a goal-line stand to preserve the victory.

UAlbany struck first in the game and took a 7-0 lead after one quarter of play. The Bulls responded on their ensuing possession and marched 75 yards on 15 plays and tied the game when Elijah Holmes found Morrow in the corner of the endzone for a nine-yard touchdown.

Holmes, making his first career start for the Bulls, connected with Morrow again, late in the second quarter, to put Buffalo ahead, 14-7.

The Great Danes scored 10 unanswered points and held a 17-14 lead for much of the second half.

Trailing by three with 6:43 left in the game, the Bulls took over and marched down the field. Holmes had a 20-yard completion to Jaylen Andrews, a 25-yard completion to Clint Walker and a 15-yard completion to Patrick Clacks III to set up the Bulls in the redzone. Two plays later, Holmes found Morrow for the game-winning score.

Morrow had a career-high seven receptions and three touchdowns. He became the first Bull since Anthony Johnson, in 2018, to have three touchdown catches in a game.

Holmes completed 26 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

The rushing attack was led by Messiah Burch who gained 74 yards on the ground, including a career-long 47-yard burst.

Defensively, the Bulls were led by linebacker Stevie Bracey who had seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. Safeties Miles Greer and Ronnell Davis each added seven tackles and cornerback Keontez Bradley had a team-high eight stops.

SaVeon Brown had six tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception.

Buffalo will next play at FIU on Sept. 12.
