Bulls Begin Season with Win Over Purple Eagles at Home

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming and diving program opened its season on Saturday afternoon in the Alumni Arena Natatorium, competing against Cornell and Niagara. The Bulls took care of business, defeating the Purple Eagles 213-85. The competition against Cornell was not scored.
With the win, the Bulls are now 37-7 all-time versus Niagara.
SWIMMING
The Bulls' momentum began in the pool, winning seven of the 13 events.
The team opened the meet with an event win in the 200-yard medley relay. The Buffalo relay team of Vivian Roy, Pinar Donmez, Nicole Aguilar and Bella Forsman completed the event with a time of 1:44.35.
Elise McCaul (2nd, 4:30.36) and Kamilla Nemes (3rd, 4:32.98) then took two of the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley. Karen Austin (6th, 4:38.51) also placed inside the top six.
Forsman continued the Bulls' momentum, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.52. Abbey Gardner followed to take third with a time of 1:54.72. Freshman Alex Bulat placed sixth with a time of 1:55.47.
Forsman later earned her second event win of the afternoon, posting a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and a time of 52.29. The time was an event personal record for the sophomore. Bulat also posted a top five finish, taking fifth with a time of 53.41.
Donmez took second place in the 50-yard breaststroke for the Bulls (29.92), with Grace Rider (30.64) trailing to take fourth. Madi Tewksbury followed (31.26), putting three Buffalo swimmers inside the top seven finishers.
Aguilar secured the Bulls' third event win of the afternoon, taking the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.60. Sophomore Maddy Schnelzer took sixth for the Bulls too, completing the event with a time of 59.13.
The Bulls posted two top five finishes in the 100-yard backstroke, with Roy taking second (58.83) and freshman Hattie Wasmuth earning fifth (59.50).
Ava Pauly earned a fourth event win for the Bulls in the pool, taking the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.65. The sophomore was just over a second shy of her personal record that ranks fourth in program history (1:02.23). Donmez (3rd, 1:04.60) and Rider (4th, 1:06.51) trailed to put three Bulls inside the top four swimmers to place.
Forsman closed out the individual events with her third win of the afternoon, finishing in first place in the 100-yard individual medley (58.32). The sophomore's time was an event personal record.
The Bulls closed out the meet in the pool with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Aguilar, Gardner, Amanda Jurgelon and Bulat completed the event with a time of 3:32.15.
"The girls have been putting in hard work in practice and today was a really good start to the season, showing us where we are at and what we need to work on," said Head Coach Andy Bashor.

DIVING
Freshman Adele Melamud had a strong debut with the Bulls, winning both the one-meter and three-meter events.
Melamud took the three-meter event with a score of 293.55, three and a half points shy of reaching the program's all-time top 10. The freshman was joined by teammates to take six of the top 10 spots for the Bulls in the event. Sophie Meuwissen placed second with a personal record score of 293.10, followed by Mallory Hanna in third (256.50), Maggie Meyers in fifth (240.30) and Daphne Fox in sixth (231.60). Fox's performance was a new personal record. Presley Dorsett (8th, 222.38) and Tristan Krajcarski (10th, 216.30) rounded out the Bulls' competitors.
Melamud then took first-place in one-meter diving with a score of 278.48, less than four-tenths of a point shy of reaching the program's all-time top 10 (278.85). The Bulls took six of the top seven spots in the event. Dorsett placed second (269.55), followed by Hanna in third (261.75), Meuwissen in fourth (259.35), Meyers in sixth (239.85) and Krajcarski in seventh (229.35).
