BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field team is set to compete at the 14th annual SPIRE Midwest Invite on Saturday, hosted by the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Track events are scheduled to begin at 9 am with field events to start at 10 am.
Through two meets the Bulls have already made their mark on the program record books. Freshmen Ryan Cardichon, Akuot Kuany, Stella Kapp and sophomore Kara Moran all joined the UB indoor record book in their respective events.
Cardichon entered the record book in the men's high jump at the Al Campbell Invite, winning the event with a mark of 2.07 meters. The freshman's new personal best tied Tomarris Bell's personal record mark set in 2013 for the sixth-ranked performance in UB indoor history. Cardichon will compete in the long jump this weekend at SPIRE. The freshman finished seventh in the event in the Bulls season-opening meet, with a mark of 6.47 meters.
Kuany joined the all-time UB indoor record books in December, winning the women's high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters. Kuany's mark tied Caitlin Godin for fourth all-time, set in 2006. Kapp finished second in the women's high jump to Kuany with a mark of 1.70 meters. The freshman's mark joined the all-time UB indoor record book too, ranking ninth. Kapp is set to compete this weekend in the event.
Moran was the first collegiate finisher in the women's long jump at the Akron Haynes Lancaster Open with a new personal best mark of 5.77 meters. The sophomore's mark ranks sixth all-time in indoor history, tying Kailyn Arcury's personal record set in 2017. Moran doubled back to win the triple jump with a mark of 11.92 meters, a personal-record indoor performance that ranks eighth all-time in indoor history. Moran will compete in both the triple jump and long jump at SPIRE.
Tal Hamel and Kevin Gabalski returned to Buffalo for their senior seasons with personal records to chase and all-time ranks to climb.
At the Akron Haynes Lancaster Open, Gabalski set a new personal record of 8.11 in the 60-meter hurdles to rank eighth all-time in UB indoor history. The senior doubled back at the Al Campbell Invite to break his record with a time of 8.10, remaining at eight in the program ranks. Gabalski will compete in the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles, as well as the men's long jump this Saturday.
Hamel rose the indoor ranks twice at the Al Campbell Invite. The senior began the night by taking first place in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.80 seconds. Hamel's time joined the UB indoor leaderboard, ranking fifth all-time. The senior doubled back to win the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.37 seconds. Hamel's new personal record rose to second all-time in UB indoor history. The senior only trails Josh Gali's school record of 21.25, set in 2017. Hamel is expected to compete in the men's 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay at SPIRE.
