
Bulls Bring Home Eight Medals on Final Day of MAC Outdoor Championships

DeKalb, Ill. – The University at Buffalo Track & Field team closed out the MAC Outdoor Championships on the campus of Northern Illinois University on Saturday. The Bulls brought home eight more medals on the final day of conference championships, making it 14 total medals throughout the week in DeKalb. The men ended the championship with 103 points, taking fourth place, while the women had 48 points to finish eighth.
Zahra Amos won the women's high jump, earning the second gold medal of her career at Buffalo, with a new personal best outdoor mark of 1.76 meters. The junior's gold medal was the Bulls' second event win this weekend, joining Jenna Reid who won the javelin throw. Amos' personal record jump is now tied with Zaria Fuller (2022) for third all-time in UB outdoor history. The junior won the MAC Indoor high jump title in February, tying her school record indoor mark of 1.80 meters.
Tal Hamel broke the 200 meter school record for the second time this week, this time in the event finals, earning a silver medal with his time of 20.87. In the preliminary round of the 200 meter on Friday, Hamel broke the long-standing record of 20.95, set by Josh Gali in 2017. Hamel also earned a silver medal in the men's 400 meter with a time of 47.33. Hamel's time was just two-tenths of a second shy of his personal record that ranks fourth all-time in UB outdoor history (47.19).
Buffalo ran a strong race in the men's 1,500, an event the team has found success in all season, with Evan Hilbert and Noah Brightman both earning podium finishes. Hilbert brought home a silver medal, finishing with a time of 3:46.72, four seconds shy of his outdoor school record mark (3:42.64). Brightman earned bronze with a new personal best time of 3:47.14. The junior's new personal record ranks third all-time in UB outdoor history.
Johann Matzal brought home a bronze medal in the men's 800 meter with a season-best time of 1:53.00. Matzal's bronze medal is his second of the year, with the junior taking third at the MAC Indoor Championships 800 meter run in February. Gabe Watson finished fifth in the men's 800 meter finals with a time of 1:55.49. Watson was two seconds shy of his season-best time in the event (1:53.43).
Ryan Buzby earned a bronze medal in the men's 5,000 meter with a time of 14:42.87. Buzby's medal was his second of the weekend after taking home silver in the men's 10,000 meter on the opening night of competition. Alex Hislop also competed for the Bulls in the 5,000 meter, finishing in 15:01.05 to take seventh. Luke Stoeffler trailed the upperclassmen, placing tenth with a time of 15:15.06.
Aleksandra Szulska brought home a bronze medal in the women's 5,000 meter with a time of 16:48.32. The freshman's medal is the first of her career at UB. Anna Recktenwalt also competed for the Bulls, finishing 21st (18:26.16).
Quinn Smith finished fifth in the men's discus throw with a personal best mark of 51.54 meters. Smith's new personal record ranks sixth all-time in UB outdoor history. William Trembley also competed for the Bulls, taking seventh with a personal best throw of 49.10 meters. Trembley's mark was less than a meter shy of cracking the all-time outdoor leaderboards (50.07m).
Jermaine Ewers finished seventh in the men's 100 meter finals with a time of 10.54. Ewers' time tied his personal record that ranks fourth all-time in UB outdoor history.
Kara Moran finished ninth in the women's triple jump with a personal best of 11.71 meters. Moran's new personal record fell just shy of the all-time UB outdoor ranks, with the tenth-ranked mark in program history being 11.72 meters.
Michael Parks finished fifth in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.47. Parks' time was the season-best in the event.
Calvin Finger took fifth place in the men's long jump with a season-best mark of 1.96 meters.
The Bulls' relay team of Brian Murphy, Hamel, Parks and Ewers fourth in the men's 4x100 meter relay with a time of 43.43. The relay time was just over a second shy of the team's best this season (42.16).
In the men's 4x400 relay, the Buffalo men set a season-best time of 3:23.38, finishing fifth. The relay team consisted of Fernando Sanchez, Julian Smith, Jason Colindres and Hamel. The previous season best time for the Bulls was 3:26.00.
The Buffalo women also had a season-best time in the 4x400 relay, finishing in 3:54.69 to take tenth. The Bulls' previous best in the event was 4:02.30.
