BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo Track & Field team is hosting the UB Alumni Invite on Saturday, bringing eight schools and five track and field clubs to UB Stadium.
The Bulls are looking to defend their home track against local programs, a feat the team has successfully done over the past three seasons, placing first on both the men's and women's sides.
The eight local schools looking to end Buffalo's streak at this season's invitational are Canisius, Daemen, D'Youville, Le Moyne, Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Colgate and Hilbert. Six of the eight schools competed in the invitational last outdoor season but were not able to deny the Bulls from their third straight victory.
Buffalo enters the annual home meet following a strong weekend at the University of Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, where the Bulls had several athletes join the top ten outdoor ranks in program history and Aleksandra Szulska broke a school record in the 5,000 meter (16:34.52). Szulska is set to compete for the Bulls again this weekend in the 5,000 meter and the 1,500 meter.
After joining the all-time outdoor ranks in the men's 1,500 meter at the Bison Outdoor Classic, Ryan Buzby looks to move up the program leaderboards, running in the event again on Saturday. Buzby's time (3:48.96) ranks second among the entries in the event only trailing Evan Hilbert who holds Buffalo's school record (3:42.64). Hilbert's season-best time of 3:44.91 ranks atop the Mid-American Conference.
Tal Hamel is set to compete in the men's 200 meter, following a performance that notched him as second in program history at the Bison Outdoor Classic (21.09). Hamel's time fell just two-tenths of a second behind Joshua Gali's school record set in 2017 (20.95) a mark the junior will chase in his remaining time at Buffalo.
Indoor shot put MAC Champion Jonathan Surdej aims to win the shot put at the team's home event. The graduate student's season-best mark in the event currently sits atop the mark by nearly one meter. Surdej has won seven consecutive individual MAC Championships in the event, the most in program history, looking to win one more in his final outdoor season as a Bull.
Indoor high jump MAC Champion Zahra Amos is set to compete in the high jump on Saturday. The junior joined the school school's all-time leaderboards earlier this outdoor season, with a mark of 1.75 meters, tying Caitlin Godin (2006) for fourth. Amos broke the indoor school record earlier in the season, with a jump of 1.80 meters, then matched that mark again at MAC Championships.
Jenna Reid ranks atop the starting list in the women's javelin throw. The graduate transfer has made her mark already at Buffalo, placing seventh at the Bison Outdoor Classic with a throw of 42.94 meters. Reids' mark ranks fifth in program history and a top the conference.
The competition begins at 10 am, with events running throughout the day, tentatively ending at 5 pm. Spectators can enter the stadium at the northwest gates. All information regarding the meet can be accessed here.
