Bulls Host Southern Miss on National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Alumni Arena

BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (13-8, 7-4 MAC) hosts Southern Miss in the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge on National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday at 2pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on 1400 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the first overall meeting between Buffalo and Southern Miss. UB is 5-4 all-time against Sun Belt Conference opponents.
Buffalo put on a defensive clinic as they fought and clawed their way to a gutsy road win with a 49-43 victory over Miami (OH) at Millett Hall on Wednesday night. The 43 points scored by Miami (OH) were the second-fewest scored by a UB opponent this season. Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led the way for the Bulls, recording her second straight double-double, with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals. Sophomore Hattie Ogden also scored in double figures with 11 points, including 3-of-5 shooting from deep, while senior Rana Elhusseini tied a career-high with 10 rebounds.
Watson, a four-time MAC Player of the Week, leads the league and ranks fourth in the nation in scoring at 24.6 points per game to go with 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. She also ranks in the top 10 nationally in field goals made (204), field goals made per game (9.7) and total points (516). Kirsten Lewis-Williams currently ranks 11th in the MAC in scoring (11.9 ppg) and 12th in rebounding (5.8 rpg), which is first and second, respectively, among all rookies in the league in those categories. Elhusseini (8.5 ppg, 3.0 apg) and Ogden (8.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg) continue to be impact players for UB.
As a team, Buffalo is ranked in the top four in the MAC in scoring offense (68.3), scoring defense (64.0), scoring margin (+4.3), field goal percentage (.430), field goal defense (.385), three-point field goal percentage (.315), 3FG defense (.287) and assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.0). The Bulls are averaging 35 points per game in the paint while also turning defense into offense, averaging 15.4 points per contest off opponent's turnovers.
The Southern Miss Lady Eagles are 13-9 overall and 6-6 in league action after defeating Georgia Southern 62-54 on Wednesday. Southern Miss defeated Akron 77-60 in the first game of the MAC-SBC Challenge in November. The Lady Eagles are led offensively by Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Dominique Davis who is averaging 20.8 points and 3.9 assists per game. Melyia Grayson (13.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is also averaging in double figures while Jacorriah Bracey (9.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg) is also a main contributor.
Southern Miss has had 40 or more rebounds in 13 of 22 games and is currently averaging 40.9 boards per game. They are ranked 38th in the nation in rebounding and 62nd in rebound margin (+5.2). The Lady Eagles have historically rejected the three-ball. Of Southern Miss's 92 threes, 33 game in the first five games (6.6 per game) while the team has made just 59 in the 16 games since then (3.7 per game). They are shooting 30.4 percent of their shots from behind the arc. Since 2019-20, Southern Miss is 51-11 (.823) when holding opponents under 70 points, including an 11-2 mark this year.
