SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team closed out the non-conference slate in style as they defeated Le Moyne 107-59 at Ted Grant Court on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bulls improve to 11-0, the best start in program history. It is also the second time UB has cracked the century mark this season.
Six Bulls scored in double figures on the afternoon, led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 20 points. Senior Ariana Seawell recorded a UB career-high with 17 points while sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 15 of her 16 points in the second half. Terah Harness and Alexis Davis scored 14 points, the latter adding 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, and Noelani Cornfield stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, four rebounds and seven assists. It was the first time the Bulls had six in double figures since 2021.
The Bulls opened the game on a 10-3 run, capped by back-to-back triples from Harness and Cornfield. Buffalo extended their lead as Davis powered up for a layup and Harness drilled another three to put UB up 17-3 and force a Le Moyne timeout at the 5:40 mark. UB continued to attack as they converted four straight at the charity stripe before Seawell powered up for a layup through contact to put UB up by 20 at the 2:45 mark. Seawell then went to work again, this time with a layup off glass, before Harness hit her third triple of the quarter to give the Bulls a 30-10 lead at the end of the first.
Buffalo continued to pound the ball inside as Davis and Seawell converted back-to-back layups before Watson got a floater in the lane to drop to force a timeout early in the second quarter. The Bulls turned defense into offense as Paula Lopez came up with a steal and scored in transition before Watson converted a pair of driving layups to put UB up 47-19 at the three-minute mark. Lopez then went on a 5-0 run by herself in less than a minute, and the Bulls led 59-24 at the half. It is just the third time the Bulls have scored 50+ points in a half this season, and the first against a Division I opponent.
Lewis-Williams got going early in the third quarter with a pair of pull-up jumpers. The sophomore continued to attack with another basket in the paint before Mallory Daly poked a ball loose and found Watson up ahead for a transition layup and the Bulls led 71-35 at the 2:51 mark. Lewis-Williams would then add to her total as Watson found her on the block with a beautiful dish and she finished the layup plus the foul and the Bulls took a 79-41 lead at the end of the third.
The Bulls scored on four straight possessions to start the fourth quarter and cruised to the victory from there, outscoring the Dolphins by 10 in the final frame.
Buffalo dominated in multiple statistical categories, starting with the battle in the paint which they won 58-6. UB also forced 21 Le Moyne turnovers and capitalized, scoring 32 points off those miscues. The Bulls also dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Dolphins 49-28, including 16 second chance rebounds, which they turned into 23 points. The transition game continues to be powerful for UB as they added 21 points in open space.
Up next, Buffalo will open Mid-American Conference play against Central Michigan on Wednesday, January 1 at Alumni Arena at 2pm.
