BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (7-10, 3-1 MAC) will travel to Akron, Ohio and face the Zips (7-9, 3-1 MAC) on Tuesday evening for mid-week #MACtion. The match will start at 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
The all-time series against Akron has been in favor of the Zips. They lead the series, 31-25, but the Bulls are winners of five straight and have swept the opposition in the last four matches. Head Coach Scott Smith is 9-2 against Akron in his tenure at Buffalo and has swept Akron in six of his nine wins.
The Golden Flashes were picked ninth in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 48 points. Last season they finished with a 13-16 overall record. Currently, the Bulls and Zips are tied for fourth in the MAC standings at 3-1 in conference play.
The Bulls are coming off a weekend sweep over the Kent State Golden Flashes. In their last three matches, the Bulls haven't dropped a set to Western Michigan and Kent State. The last time the Bulls won three consecutive matches by a sweep came in the 2018 season when they beat Kent State (11/2), Ohio (11/3) and Akron (11/8).
With a win over Akron on Tuesday, Head Coach Scott Smith would become the third coach in program history to win 80 career matches. Only Peter Weinrich (1975-80, 107-121-4) and Robert Maxwell (1981-98, 409-285-8) have 80+ wins in program history. Smith would be just the second coach in program history to reach this milestone in their Division I era since 1991. Maxwell had 131 wins from 1991-98.
Fifth year Katrin Trebichavska had seven aces on the weekend against Kent State. She's currently sixth in the nation in aces per set at 0.73 and 20th with total aces with 30. Trebichavska is currently the program leader in aces per set with .576. The Bulls are 29th in the nation with 111 total aces. Last weekend the Bulls had a three-set season-high 12 aces against Kent State.
Abby Leigh leads the conference with a .410 hitting percentage that is good for 25th in the nation. Leigh hit a career-high .786 against Kent State on Saturday with 11 kills on 14 attempts and no errors. This marked her 16th career match with no errors with a minimum of 10 attacks.
Maria Futey is five digs away from passing Lindsay Matikosh (2000-03, 1,414) for fourth all-time in career digs.
Following this weekend the Bulls will stay on the road at Miami (OH) (7-9, 0-4 MAC) and Ball State (8-7, 1-3 MAC) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
