BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (11-11, 7-2 MAC) swept the Toledo Rockets (13-8, 6-3 MAC) on Friday evening (25-23, 25-16, 25-18) to move them to 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls are now in a three-way tie for first with Bowling Green and Central Michigan.
After dropping their first home match of the season to Bowling Green last night, the Bulls came out on a mission. The Buffalo offense was well balanced as five Bulls finished with at least five kills. Katrin Trebichavska had a match-high 12 kills as Abby Leigh, Mandy Leigh and Manoela Forlin finished with six while Luli Arcucci added five.
The Bulls were terrific from the service line as Maria Futey added four more to her season total, bringing her to 24. The Bulls finished with 11 aces on the night, making it their sixth match of the season finishing with double-digit aces.
It wasn't the best offensive showing by either team, but the Bulls' defense was strong. At the net, Buffalo made their presence known as they tallied 12.0 total blocks to Toledo's 6.0. A. Leigh and Ava Kanj led the team with 5 total blocks as Arcucci had 4 block assists.
In the first set, Buffalo forced Toledo to call a timeout as they went a 5-0 run and took a 12-9 lead. It wasn't long until Toledo called another timeout trailing 16-12. Out of the break, the Rockets got their engines going with a 4-1 run to cut Buffalo's lead to one. Toledo was able to take a 20-19 lead and forced the Bulls to use their final timeout. Buffalo's tough serves helped them close out the set as they went on a 5-1 run to take the set, 25-23.
The Bulls stampeded to a second set victory as they never trailed. Buffalo outhit Toledo, .280 to .038. Buffalo led by as much as 14 at 21-7, but the Rockets battled until the end as they made it 25-16 down the stretch.
In the third set, it was back and forth as the Bulls led 15-13 at the media timeout. Out of the break, Buffalo used a 5-2 run and two Trebichavska aces to force a Toledo timeout at 20-15. Chloe Brown closed the match out with an ace of her own.
"I was incredibly proud of our serving tonight," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "I feel like our aggressiveness and consistency really opened the match up for us. Our serving disrupted their offense and allowed us to get our blocking going. While it wasn't our strongest night offensively, I thought it showed some growth from our attackers, showing patience and trust in our defense to continue plays."
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday when the Akron Zips (8-13, 4-5 MAC) make their way to Western New York. The match will start at 6 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
