
Bulls Host Bowling Green on Education Day

BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo women's basketball team hosts Bowling Green for UB's Education Day game at Alumni Arena on Wednesday at 11am.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Jared Zeidman (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on 1520 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 51st overall meeting between Buffalo and Bowling Green with the Falcons owning a 28-22 series advantage. The squads split a pair of meetings last season, with each team winning on the other's floor.
Buffalo fell to a hot shooting Western Michigan squad on Saturday afternoon. Buffalo was led offensively by Chellia Watson who scored 15 points. Freshman Alexis Davis scored 12 points and fellow rookie Kirsten Lewis-Williams also scored in double figures with 11 points to go with seven rebounds. Β
Watson leads MAC and ranks sixth in the nation in scoring at 22.9 points per game to go with 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. Lewis-Williams currently ranks 12th in the MAC in scoring (11.9 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (6.4 rpg), which is first among all rookies in the league in both categories. Senior Rana Elhusseini (9.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and sophomore Hattie Ogden (8.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg) continue to be impact players for UB while Davis is second on the team in rebounding (6.0 rpg).
As a team, Buffalo is ranked in the top three in the MAC in scoring defense (63.4), field goal percentage (.426), field goal defense (.382), three-point field goal percentage (.333) and 3FG defense (.295). The Bulls are averaging 32.9 points per game in the paint while also turning defense into offense, averaging 15 points per contest off opponent's turnovers.
The Bowling Green Falcons are 10-6 overall and 4-2 in league action after falling 56-47 at Miami (OH) on Saturday. Three of the Falcons' losses have come to nationally-ranked teams, and the five teams who have beaten BGSU currently have a combined record of 74-12. The Falcons are led offensively by Amy Velasco who is averaging 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. Morgan Sharps (12.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and Paige Kohler (10.3 ppg, 3.8 RPG) are also averaging in double figures while Erika Porter is leading the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg). Velasco leads the team in both assists and steals in MAC play, while ranking second in points and tied for second in rebounds.
BGSU is third in the MAC in three-point field goal percentage (.326), while ranking fourth in rebounding defense (36.2) and blocks per game (3.4). Fred Chmiel is in his first season at the helm of the Falcons. Chmiel, one of the architects of a South Carolina team that advanced to the Final Four in each of his final three seasons there, was named to the BGSU helm on April 8, 2023.
