University at Buffalo track & field/cross country incoming freshman Aleksandra (Ola) Szulska competed for her home country of Poland in the 5000m at the European U20 Championships, held last week in Jerusalem, Israel.
Szulska, of Gdynia, Poland, won the Polish U20 5000m National Championships in May with a time of 16:51.44 which earned her qualifying mark for the European U20 Championships. At the U20 Championships an elite group of 27 women competed in the 5000m. Szulska was seeded 18th with her qualifying mark and the top seed position held by Agate Caune of Latvia with a time of 15:12.94. Caune took an early lead in the event and went on to set a new European U20 Championship Meet record of 15:03.85 with a winning margin of over 45 seconds. Szulska, running a patient and smart race in the hot and humid weather, placed ninth overall in a time of 16:57.54.
In June, Szulska was selected for her first National Team to compete in the 3000m at the U20 Four Countries Match, held in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia where she placed 3rd overall.
