
Benussi Wins Heptathlon at Italian National Championships

BUFFALO, NY - Scilla Benussi, a senior on the University at Buffalo track and field team, took gold at the Italian National Championships held in Molfetta, Italy this past weekend.
Coming off a strong showing at the Mid-American Championships where she won the bronze medal in the heptathlon and the gold medal in the javelin, Benussi took her season to a new level at the Italian National Championships.
A native of Oriago, Italy, Benussi started off the first day of competition with a massive personal best mark of 14.48 in the 100 high hurdles, scoring 912 points and placing fourth overall in the field of 13 women. In the second event, the high jump, she cleared 1.65m/5'4", scoring 795 points. Event three, the shot put, Benussi threw 11.89m/39'00" for second place in the event scoring 654 points. In the final event of day one, the 200m, Benussi ran 26.98, scoring 713 points. Her day one total was 3,074 points.
Day two started with the long jump and Benussi leaped out to tie her personal best mark of 5.63m/18'5.75", scoring 738 points and placing fourth in the event. The sixth event, the javelin, Benussi hit another big personal best mark of 43.62m, besting her previous mark set at the MAC Championships (42.95m), scoring 737 points and winning the event by over two-meters.
In the final event of the two-day competition, the 800m, Benussi nailed another personal-best mark, running 2:22.90 and scoring 785 points. Her total score of 5,334 points was a new personal best and earned her the National Championship title over second-place Giulia Riccardi who scored 5,314 points. Third place was earned by Alice Lunardon with 5,262 points.
Benussi, a computer science engineering major, is entering her senior at the University at Buffalo.
