Bulls Fall in Final Home Game of the Season

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (12-35, 6-17 MAC) fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies (24-24, 13-12 MAC) in their final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies won the series as they took the final game, 6-2.
Northern Illinois jumped out to a 2-0 in the first inning. Freshman Emily Watters struggled for the Bulls in the first inning of action allowing two runs on four hits. UB was fortunate to only allow two runs as the Huskies had the bases loaded and did not score any additional runs.
The Bulls bounced back in the bottom half of the inning as Madison Fernimen and Alexis Lucyshyn went yard to tie the game at two.
UB made a pitching change in the second inning as Lucychyn came in relief. The bats stayed hot for Northern Illinois as the leadoff batter hit a solo home run to center to take a 3-2 lead. With one out and a runner on third base, the Huskies were able to knock another run in on a fielder's choice. Northern Illinois now held a 4-2 lead.
The Bulls started to make some noise in the bottom of the fourth with Lucyshyn and Abbey Nagel each singling up the middle. Both runners were stranded as they Bulls then went 1-2-3 to close the inning.
The Huskies added two insurance runs in the seventh. After a walk, the Huskies hit a two-run home run to take a 6-2 lead. Buffalo had no answer as they went down in order.
Watters pitched one inning, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. Lucyshyn went six innings in relief and allowed four runs on four hits, four walks, and struck out two.
Lucyshyn led the offense with two hits with Fernimen, Brianna Castro, Nagel, and Mia Mitchell had one each.
The Bulls will wrap up their season next weekend in Athens, Ohio as they battle the Ohio Bobcats.
