KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team had their 2022-23 season come to a close on Saturday as the fourth-seeded Bulls lost 4-0 to top-seed Toledo in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals.
The Rockets took the first point of the match with wins at first and second doubles. Cheng Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang won 6-3 at third doubles to keep UB alive but Aleksandr Kalinin and Daniils Snaiders dropped a tough tiebreak battle 6-7(3) at second doubles.
In singles action, the Rockets took a 2-0 advantage with a straight sets victory at the first position, followed by a victory at three. Toledo then clinched the match at fifth singles.
The Bulls were battling hard in the remaining three singles matches as UB had taken the first set in all three matches. Fifth year Simon Wibler won his first set 6-3 and was up 2-1 in the third set before play was stopped. Sniaders won his first set 7-6 and was battling in the second set and freshman Theodoros Mitsakos went 6-4, 4-6 in his first two sets and had just begun the third when play stopped.
"This season has been a step in the right direction," said head coach Lee Nickell. "Today as a really tough college tennis match that could have gone either way. Credit to Toledo, they deserved that win. I want to thank your seniors Simon and Greg for all of their hard work throughout their careers. We will miss them deeply."
Today's match was the final one for UB's two seniors Simon Wibler and Greg Hastings. The Bulls close out the year with a 9-9 record.
