BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team showed poise and incredible fight from start to finish as they defeated Western Michigan 4-3 in a big Mid-American Conference match at Miller Tennis Center on Friday. With the win the Bulls improve to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in league action.
The Bulls won the doubles point in dramatic fashion as Cheng Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang blanked the Broncos 6-0 at third doubles and then Aleksandr Kalinin and Daniils Snaiders followed with a thrilling tiebreak win, 7-6(9), at second doubles to give UB a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Broncos got on the board with a win at third singles to tie the match at one and then followed with a win at sixth singles to take a 2-1 lead.
Fifth year Simon Wibler evened the match at two with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win at second singles but the Broncos answered with a win at first singles to go up 3-2.
With the Bulls needing wins in their final two singles matches, Theodoros Mitsakos overcame a dropped second set to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at fifth singles to tie the match at three and Finn Macnamara overcame a 5-2 deficit in the third set to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and clinch the match for the Bulls.
"It was a crazy match today, up and down all the way through," said head coach Lee Nickell. "It was great to see Finn, especially, clinch the match. All together the doubles, we fought off match points, played really well and then getting into singles and getting some first sets as quick as we did. Western is an unbelievable team, really tough and for us to pull it out like we did, I'm super proud."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, April 2 as they welcome Northern Illinois to Miller Tennis Center for an 11am match.
