BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team (15-3, 1-0 MAC) opened Mid-American Conference play in style with a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Miami (OH) on Sunday afternoon at Miller Tennis Center.
The RedHawks took the doubles point with wins at the first and third positions, but the Bulls played well and carried that fight and poise into singles action.
Senior Ambre Amat gave the Bulls their first point of the day with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles and Basak Akbas followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at third singles to put UB up 2-1.
Miami tied the match at two with a win at first singles before Azra Deniz Comlek put the Bulls back on top, winning a three-set thriller 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-4 at second singles.
The RedHawks answered with a three-set win of their own at fifth singles to tie the match at three as the attention of all in attendance turned to the match at sixth singles between Mariana Carvajal Torres and Sarah Dev. After dropping the first set 6-7, Carvajal Torres evened the match at a set apiece with a dominating 6-0 win in set two to force a tiebreak third set in which she excelled under pressure in a 6-3 win to seal the match for the Bulls.
"So incredibly proud of this team," said head coach Kristen (Ortman) Maines. "Across the board they have worked so hard all season up to this point and for them to come out and win in this fashion, at home, just kudos to them."
Buffalo now hits the road for a pair of matches, beginning on Friday, March 24 at Ball State.
