Bulls Shine Under Pressure in 64-50 Win over Akron
3/1/2023 8:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight game the University at Buffalo women's basketball team faced a win-or-go-home situation, and for the second game in a row they rose to the occasion, defeating Akron 64-50 in wire-to-wire fashion on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
With the win, the Bulls now control their own destiny as a win on Saturday against Western Michigan would punch their ticket to Cleveland for the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Three Bulls scored in double figures led by Re'Shawna Stone who scored a game-high 20 points. Fellow fifth year Zakiyah Winfield recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists and Jazmine Young scored 15 points while adding five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Emerita Mashaire just missed out on double figures, scoring nine points to go with six rebounds.
The Bulls scored on their opening possession and several thereafter as they opened the game on a 14-3 run, sparked by a pair of threes by Stone and transition buckets by Young and Mashaire, to force an Akron timeout at the 5:22 mark. The Bulls extended their run to 11-0 on a Mashaire layup before the Zips snapped an extended scoring drought with a layup off their own. Buffalo stayed aggressive as Winfield skied up for an offensive rebound and knocked down a mid-range jumper and then found Young on the wing for a skip-pass three to put UB up 21-10 at the end of the first.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before Young knocked down a mid-range jumper and Stone followed with a spot-up three from the top of the key to put the Bulls up 28-17 at the media timeout. The ball continued to move well for Buffalo as Winfield hit a cutting Stone for a layup off glass to put UB up 13 but the Zips answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to nine and would later hit another triple in the final minute to trim the UB lead to 32-24 at the half.
The Bulls drew up a great play and executed it to perfection on their first possession of the third quarter as Mashaire hit a cutting Winfield for an easy layup. Later, Stone turned on the jets and raced up court for a coast-to-coast layup and Mashaire cashed in a pair at the charity stripe to put UB up by 12 and force an Akron timeout at the 7:20 mark. The Buffalo offense cooled, and Akron took advantage, scoring on two straight possessions, to cut the UB lead to 39-32 at the media timeout. The teams traded defensive stops and then Akron used another 5-0 run to cut the lead to four with just under two minutes to play. Freshman Hattie Ogden responded with a much-needed triple from the top of the key and the Bulls led 46-40 at the end of the third.
Ogden continued to heat up as she drilled a three on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter and then she hit Young on the baseline for a layup to put UB up by 11. The Zips answered with back-to-back baskets before the teams traded free throws and Buffalo held a 53-46 lead at the final media timeout. The Bulls extended their lead to 11 on a jumper by Stone and a steal and score from Stone and Young and the Buffalo defense sealed the game from there allowing just two points over the final five minutes of play.
Akron's 50 points were the second fewest allowed by the Bulls this season. For the second straight game, Buffalo held the edge on the glass, 42-36, while also maintaining a 26-18 advantage in the paint. UB scored 16 points off Akron turnovers while adding eight fastbreak points.
"The fight that this team has continued to show this year was put on display for 40 minutes tonight," said head coach Becky Burke. "That was one of our best defensive efforts of the year when we need it the most. I'm so happy for the players in the locker room. They deserved this."
Up next, Buffalo hosts Western Michigan on Senior Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday at 2pm.
