BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball put a bow on the year 2023 as they defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 70-61 at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
While the Bulls still have one non-conference game to play in February, the second game of the MAC-SBC Challenge, with today's win the Bulls secured their 11th straight winning non-conference season.
Redshirt senior Chellia Watson led all scorers with 28 points and sophomore Hattie Ogden had a breakthrough performance, scoring 18 points on a new career-high six made threes, all in the second half. Freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored in double figures for the third straight game, and eighth time in 10 games, recording 14 points to go with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
It was all Watson in the early going as she scored UB's first 10 points of the game before Lewis-Williams scored on back-to-back possessions to put the Bulls up by seven. Later, Watson came up with a steal and drilled a spot up triple from the wing and Buffalo would lead 19-14 at the end of the first.
The Hawks made a pair of threes to cut the UB lead to three early in the second quarter, but Watson answered with another triple and then got to the rim and finished through contact to give the Bulls a 28-21 lead at the media timeout. The Hawks used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to one at the 2:20 mark and Buffalo would maintain a 30-29 lead at the half.
Watson continued to attack to start the third quarter as she got to the basket for a layup and then drained a three on UB's next possession to give Buffalo a 35-29 lead and force a UMES timeout at the 8:31 mark. Lewis-Williams put her defender on skates and finished off glass for a layup to put UB back up by five, but the Hawks scored on back-to-back possessions to pull within one at the media timeout. Lewis-Williams continued to attack as she sliced to the basket for two and then drove and kicked to Ogden for a triple to put Buffalo up by four at the three-minute mark. The Hawks cut the lead back to two before the Bulls got to the free throw line and converted and then Lewis-Williams found a wide-open Ogden on the wing for a triple in the final seconds to give the Bulls a 49-45 lead at the end of the third.
The Lewis-Williams and Ogden connection continued to be fruitful as the sophomore drained her third triple of the game on another kickout feed from the freshman to give the Bulls a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Buffalo continued to stay aggressive as Lewis-Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out to Watson for a second chance three and then Oden drilled her fifth and sixth triples of the game on back-to-back possessions to give UB its largest lead of the game, 68-53, at the 3:13 mark and that would be more than enough to secure the victory.
The Bulls took care of the basketball, committing a season-low six turnovers, while forcing 19 Hawks' miscues which they converted into 13 points. UB scored 20 points in the paint and turned nine offensive rebounds into 12 second chance points. The 12 made three-point field goals is a new season-best for Buffalo.
Up next, Buffalo opens Mid-American Conference play on Wednesday, January 3 as they host Kent State at Alumni Arena at 6pm.
