Balanced Bulls Dominant in Win Over Kutztown on Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team put forth a dominant effort on both ends of the floor, as they defeated Kutztown 87-47 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. With the win, the Bulls improve to 5-1 on the year.
It was a balanced offensive attack for UB as 12 players saw action, with 11 finding the scoresheet on the day. Five Bulls scored in double figures led by redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 17 points. Freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 15 points to go with five rebounds and three assists, Rana Elhusseini added 11 points and Paula Lopez and Kiara Johnson each recorded season-highs with 10 points each.
Johnson made her presence known early on backing her defender down for layups on two straight possessions before Elhusseini drilled a corner triple and Watson got a floater in the lane to drop to give UB a 11-5 lead at the first media timeout. The defense continued to stifle as they held the Golden Bears scoreless for three-plus minutes and the offense took advantage as Alexis Davis got an offensive rebound putback and Sitota Gines pushed the pace and found Elhusseini for a fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 17-7 lead at the end of the first.
The UB defense continued to shut down the Golden Bears as they held them without a field goal for the opening four minutes of the second quarter and Buffalo capitalized on the offensive end as they got to the rim and the free throw line, extending their lead to 25-13 at the media timeout. Lewis-Williams got going out of the break as she sliced through the lane for a layup plus the foul and then continued to cash in at the charity stripe, going 5-for-7 from the line in the final minutes of the quarter, to give UB a 36-21 lead at the half.
Watson heated up to start the third quarter as she used a beautiful hesitation move and finished off glass before knocking down a pair of second chance triples to give UB a 55-31 lead at the media timeout. Watson drilled another three on a kick out pass from Lewis-Williams before she came up with a steal and found Johnson for a fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 64-33 lead at the end of the third.
Buffalo continued to pour it on, opening the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run, capped by an a pair of fastbreak layups from Lewis-Williams and Elhusseini and a Ogden triple and fastbreak layup to give the Bulls their largest lead of the game, 75-33, at the 6:23 mark and the UB bench would close out the game from there to secure the victory.
Freshman Ella Take scored her first career points on a layup in the fourth quarter, Gines recorded the first basket of her UB career and senior Briyanna Baron also scored for the first time this season in the victory. Davis narrowly missed out on double figures with nine points.
Buffalo shot a season-best 64% from the floor and dominated the glass 37-17, including tying a season-best 17 second chance points off 12 offensive rebounds, while also holding a major advantage in the paint with 44 points inside. The Bulls also scored a season-high 33 points off 21 Kutztown miscues while adding 16 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will open play in the month of the December with a two-game road trip, starting on Saturday, December 2 at Stony Brook.
