STONY BROOK, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team saw its four-game win streak come to an end with an 83-52 loss to Stony Brook at Island Federal Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led UB with 17 points while freshman Alexis Davis added 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Hattie Ogden scored nine points to go with six rebounds while Rana Elhusseini and Kirsten Lewis-Williams added eight points each, with the latter also recording a career-high 11 rebounds.
It was a slow start to the game for both teams before the Bulls got things going as Lewis-Williams hit Ogden on the bock for a layup and then took it to the rim herself to give UB an early 6-4 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo extended their run to 8-2 on a stop-and-pop jumper by Watson and a pair of triples from Elhusseini and Watson to take a 14-8 lead at the 2:57 mark. The Seawolves utilized an 8-0 run to retake the lead, but Watson answered with another three from the wing in the final seconds to give UB a 17-16 lead at the end of the first.
After giving up a three on the opening possession of the second quarter the Buffalo defense clamped down, holding the Seawolves without a field goal for three minutes as they game remained knotted at 19. UB then broke their own scoring drought as Elhusseini drove and kicked to Ogden for a corer triple to tie the game at 22 but the Seawolves answered with a three on the other end and they would lead 25-24 at the media timeout. The Bulls continued to struggle offensively as they were held without a field goal for the final four minutes of the half as the hosts led 30-24 at the break.
Stony Brook opened the third quarter on a 11-2 run to go up 41-24 and force a UB timeout at the 6:20 mark. Davis gave UB a spark as she converted on a pair of tough layups and Elhusseini beat the buzzer with a floater in the lane to trim the Stony Brook lead to 57-40 at the end of the third.
Watson hit a three on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter, but Stony Brook answered with an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game thus far, 65-43, at the 6:40 mark. The Bulls continued to battle as Davis finished on a tough layup in the paint before Elhusseini drilled a three but the Seawolves put together an 11-0 run and that would be all they would need to seal the game.
Up next, Buffalo travels to Philadelphia for a contest against the Drexel Dragons on Saturday, December 9 at 2pm.
