BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (17-4, 7-2 MAC) zipped passed by the Akron Zips (10-10, 5-4 MAC) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-15. The Bulls are now 7-2 in MAC play and hold the third spot in the standings.
UB dominated the Zips from the first serve as they earned their ninth sweeping victory on the season. In the first two sets, the Bulls never trailed. Although UB's defense only racked up five blocks on the night, they forced 16 attack errors. This led to the Zips hitting .080 on the evening compared to UB's .250.
Katrin Trebichavska had a match high 15.5 points as Abby Leigh added 12.0. A. Leigh has now reached 1,000 career points with the Bulls, joining teammate Emma Gielas. Heading into the match, Maria Futey was five digs shy of 1,000 in her career. Halfway through the second set, she reached this milestone that only 10 other Bulls have accomplished.
The Bulls offense was clicking early as they got off to a 4-0 start in the first set. The Zips tied the set at seven, but that was the closest they got as the Bulls ran away with it. Trebichavska had seven kills in the set which was two more than what Akron earned. The Bulls finished with an astounding 20 first set kills.
The Bulls momentum carried over to the second set as they won, 25-20. The Zips kept the score close in the early stages but used a timeout to stop the Bulls after taking a 10-5 lead. Both teams traded points as the Bulls maintained their five-point lead. UB outhit the Zips, .229 to .114.
Akron earned their first lead of the night in the third set, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Bulls were not phased as they went on a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead. After UB took a 9-8 lead, they didn't trail the rest of the way. The Bulls held the Zips to hit a match-low .038. Lauren Otten got in on the #MACtion for the Bulls and had three kills on three attacks. UB won the set, 25-15.
The Bulls edged the Zips with four aces to one as A Leigh finished with three. Courtney Okwara finished with eight kills as both Manoela Forlin and A. Leigh had seven each. Stacia Gollogly chipped in and had six kills. Reining MAC East Setter of the Week Mandy Leigh averaged 11.67 assists per set.
"This was great win tonight and a good boost to our confidence as I thought we made improvements on many of the areas we struggled with just this past weekend," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "We still made a few more unforced errors than we'd like and that is something we will really need to get a handle on going into this series with Ball State. I felt like our defense really carried the team and took a lot of pressure off throughout the match. I feel like that was highlighted by Maria Futey earning her 1,000th dig, but we had stellar defensive performances from everyone tonight."
The Bulls are back in action for a crucial series against Ball State (12-8, 9-0 MAC) starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
