BUFFALO, N.Y. – Members of the men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Canisius Alumni Classic Saturday afternoon at Delaware Park.
On the men's side, the Bulls finished third of 13 teams with 87 points, being led by junior Cory Demo who placed 9th (25:04.4). Freshmen Samuel Cornfield (18th, 25:33.1) and Chris Turner (20th ,25:36.3) were the next two Buffalo runners to finish, with Johann Matzal (24th, 25:42.1) and Fernando Sanchez (28th, 26:06.0) rounding out the top five for the Bulls.
"The men had a strong day on the course," said Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "All nine of the men ran personal best times over the 8k distance."
In the women's 5k, the Bulls placed 5th of 12 teams with 170 points. Elizabeth Powers led all Buffalo runners, finishing 27th with a time of 19:20.5. Powers was followed by freshman Megan Smith (30th, 19:27.6), Chloe Freeland (41st, 19:50.6), Lauren O'Rourke (50th, 20:13.2) and Kaitelyn Edinger (53rd, 20:19.3).
"This was a very good race for our women, who have shown great progress throughout the season," said Mitchell. "Three of our five women ran personal best 5k times, including Powers who smashed her previous record at the Canisius course by over a minute, with Smith also shaving a minute off of her personal best 5k time."
