JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University at Buffalo men's tennis team kicked off their spring campaign this past weekend as the Bulls took traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to take part in a hidden dual, competing against the hosts North Florida and Georgia Gwinnett.
On Friday, Finn Macnamara and Simon Wibler got their first doubles wins of the spring season, picking including a victory over the #36 doubles team in the country. Daniils Snaiders and Greg Hastings and Ryan Thompson and Theodoros Mitsakos also picked up a doubles victory. In singles play, Yu-Shiang Huang picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNF, Macnamara earned a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win and Hastings fought back for a three-set win, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
The Bulls got off to a better start in the doubles' sessions on Saturday as Snaiders/Hastings picked up two more wins while Huang/Cheng Tang also earned a pair of wins. Wibler/Macnamara also picked up a win over Georgia Gwinnett's top team. In singles action, Mitsakos overcame a dropped first set to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 while Macnamara also battled back for a three-set win, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
In Sunday's singles action, Snaiders earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
"First off, we want to thank Coach Lucas and North Florida for running a great event," said head coach Lee Nickell. "We had numerous opportunities to play quality opponents and we were considered underdogs most of the way. To leave with a better than .500 record in doubles is a great sign and I am especially happy for Finn and Simon who got a tremendous win against UNF's ranked pair. Finn and Greg had some big wins this weekend in singles action, and we saw solid play throughout our singles lineup. If we want to compete at this level in singles, we need to make some adjustment tactically and our plan is to get these handled before our next match."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, January 26 at Youngstown State.
