BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Vicki Mitchell has announced team captains for the upcoming 2022-23 seasons.
Representing cross country and the distance runners are Ryan Buzby, and Meghana Caron. Buzby, a fifth-year student-athlete, is beginning his Master's in Biology. Last season, Buzby led the distance squad on the track setting a new school record in the men's 5000m of 14:12.12 at the Penn Relays. He set personal best in every event he ran on the track including 31:05.92/10,000m and 3:52.48/1500m. Caron, a senior majoring in Exercise Science/Physical Therapy, improved her cross country performance at every race a season ago, and on the track ran personal bests in the 1500m and 3000m.
On the track, fifth-year student-athlete and Doctor of Physical Therapy candidate, Travasia Singletary earns team captain honors for the second straight year with women's sprints. She is the key lead-off leg for the women's 4 x 100m relay and competes in the 60m, 100m and 200m events. Off the track, Singletary has taken the lead on several team initiatives including a monthly awareness calendar and discussions. Senior Biomedical Science major Jaron Meyer will be team captain with men's sprints. In the 2021 outdoor season, Meyer set personal best in the 100m and 200m and placed fourth at the MAC Championships. After missing the outdoor 2022 season, Meyer will be back and looking forward to leading a young and talented group of sprinters to the next level. Four-time Mid-American Conference Shot Put Champion Jonathan Surdej is the new Throws team captain. Surdej, a senior Electrical Engineering Major, has been a leader by example for his first three years. Surdej's drive and commitment to disciplined work will help to continue to guide the Bulls. The final captain is senior jumper Justin Kleppel. In the 2021–2022 season, Justin Kleppel set personal best in nearly every event and earned his way to a key position on the 4 x 100m relay squad. Kleppel also has dedicated himself to serving as the program's media content coordinator, initiating the team's media day and much of the social media content.
"These six student-athletes are exceptional leaders and role models both on and off the track," said Mitchell. "I am excited for their leadership and continuing to carry out the mission of our program and department."
The Bulls will kick off the 2022 cross country season on Saturday, September 3 as they travel to Hamilton, NY for the Harry Lang Invite, hosted by Colgate.
