
Haynes Represents UB at NCAA Leadership Forum

BUFFALO, N.Y. – On November 18-21, 2021, in Houston, Texas, Dante Haynes of the University at Buffalo men's track & field team participated at the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum. Haynes was selected as the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) representative this academic year.
The NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum engages a diverse and dynamic representation of student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administrators. Student-athletes that are selected to attend return to their campuses with invaluable leadership skills, the experience of exploring the relationship between personal values, core beliefs and behavioral styles, and a thorough understanding of the NCAA as a while. Student-athletes also gain a deeper understanding of the role of SAAC.
While at the forum, Haynes went through numerous programs aimed at leadership and self-reflection. During the presentations, there were videos, team-building exercises, self-reflection moments, and filling out a workbook that went along with each PowerPoint. Participants also had the opportunity to attend a presentation based on national SAAC and how the decisions at the top of the NCAA were made.
Haynes has developed as his skills as a leader starting with his involvement in SAAC as a team representative. He has a strong set of values and uses his voice to advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion not only for student-athletes, but for all. He is one of four students from the University at Buffalo serving on the President's Advisory Council on Race, which addresses issues pertaining to systemic inequality and racism.
Haynes, a senior, is entering his fourth season as a sprinter. On the track he specializes in distances from 100 to 400-meters and running the 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 400-meter relays for the team.
"Overall, my favorite part of the entire experience was the fantastic people I met and the stories I got to hear," stated Haynes. "I will cherish the memories made with these people for a lifetime, and I'm very thankful I got the opportunity to meet them all. Also, going to Texas for the first time was awesome as well."
The Leadership Forum was created in 1997 and has been a life-changing experience for more than 5,000 student-athletes.
