YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team (5-0, 3-0 MAC) wrapped up day two of the 2021 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday evening. The team continued to collect medals and reach the podium as they have a total of 494 points through two days of competition. They rank second with just one day to go trailing the seven-time defending MAC Champion Akron Zips by 12 points. Through two days of championship competition, the Bulls have earned 26 individual medals in 14 events. Toni Naccarella has collected a whopping five gold medals, thus far.
The Bulls struck gold from the beginning as Nicole Roitenberg, Katie Pollock, Jillian Lawton and Toni Naccarella would win the 200 medley relay in a UB school record and Eastern Michigan pool record time of 1:37.82. The squad would narrowly beat the Akron Zips by .28-seconds.
Seniors Olivia Sapio and Brittney Beetcher would earn their way up the podium in the 400 IM. Sapio would take home the silver medal in a time of 4:16.05 with Beetcher taking the bronze medal in 4:17.77.
T. Naccarella showed why she's one of the best freestyle specialists in the conference on Friday evening. She would win the 200 freestyle in style as she shattered the Eastern Michigan pool record with a time of 1:47.97. Joining her on the championship podium was freshman Marij van der Mast as she earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:48.23.
Also setting a new Eastern Michigan pool record time was Pollock in the 100 breaststroke. She would walk her way up to the top of the podium with a championship time of 1:00.66, just shy of breaking her own school record.
Roitenberg would go on and earn her second medal of the day as finished in third place in the 100 backstroke. Her time of 53.84-seconds was just .09-seconds shy of her school record time.
The Bulls would close out the second day of the championships with a final surge to victory. The squad of Beetcher, van der Mast, Maddy Rogan and T. Naccarella would win the 800 freestyle relay with a new Eastern Michigan pool time of 7:16.17. The Bulls would fall behind in the middle of the heat, but Rogan would tighten things up before the anchor run by T. Naccarella. T. Naccarella would swim as if there was no tomorrow and pass the Miami (OH) swimmer for the first place finish.
"This team is amazing," stated Head Coach Andy Bashor. "They are competing their hearts out and handling the adversity that comes with a conference championship. I am happy to coach this team and so thankful for the effort the coaching staff and support staff are putting into this meet."
