BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team (5-0, 3-0 MAC) will try to achieve something special this weekend, a Mid-American Conference Championship. Eastern Michigan will host the championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. this year. The championships will run over the course of three days starting on Thursday, April 15 and finishing on Saturday, April 17. Each day will start at 10:30 a.m. with preliminary events.
2020 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
UB hosted last year's Mid-American Conference Swimming & Diving Championships where the Bulls had their best finish in program history. The Bulls would finish in second place while earning 738.5 points, also a program record. The University of Akron would win their seventh consecutive MAC title in the Alumni Arena Pool and Natatorium. UB would earn major accolades as Head Coach Andy Bashor would earn Swim Coach of the Year honors. Diver Victoria Franz earned Freshman Diver of the Year.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
This will mark the program's 23rd MAC Championship appearance as they look for their first MAC Championship in program history. The Bulls have had a tremendous season, finishing the regular season undefeated with a 5-0 record and 3-0 in conference play. This also includes defeating the seven-time defending MAC Champion Akron Zips by a score of 169-131 in February. It marked the second time in four seasons where the Bulls finished undefeated in the regular season. In the 2017-18 season, UB finished 8-0 and 4-0 in the MAC.
The Bulls hope their depth will prove to be vital for a championship run. A year ago, the team earned five First Team and four Second Team All-MAC honorees. Of the nine honorees, seven returned this year, including all five 2020 First Team All-MAC honorees: Brittney Beetcher, Toni Naccarella, Katie Pollock, Olivia Sapio and Nicole Roitenberg. Victoria Franz and Jillian Lawton returned with their 2020 Second Team All-MAC honors.
The team has set 15 new top-10 program times and scores, including two new school records this year with the freshman class making a major impact. Once again, the depth of the team is greater than a season ago as the freshmen are a part of six of the top-10 times and scores.
In the diving well, freshman Louise Bradley looks to give the Bulls their third consecutive MAC Freshman Diver of the Year award. Bradley ranks fourth in the 1-meter dive and ninth in the 3-meter dive in program history.
Throughout the season, the Bulls earned seven MAC swimmer and diver of the week honors, the most of any team. Including two weeks of sweeping the weekly conference awards.
The team will look to improve their medal count and to win more events. The squad medaled in 15 of the 20 events at the 2020 Championships for an impressive total of 31 individual medals: two gold, 25 silver, and three bronze.
