JACKSONVILLE, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team split a doubleheader with North Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament. The Bulls won game two of the doubleheader, 7-3, after dropping the opener, 5-2.
The win in game two was the Bulls first of the season. Alexis Matheney blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put UB ahead and it never looked back.
UNF rallied for two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2. But, an RBI single by Jenna Richmond and a sacrifice fly by Mykaela Martin extended the UB lead to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
Alicia Peters ripped a two-run home run over the left-field fence to extend the Buffalo lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh inning and put the game on ice. It was Peters' second home run of the season.
The Bulls had seven runs on seven hits in the game. Matheny finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Bulls. Madelyn Hickingbottom went the distance for the win, allowing three earned runs and striking out one.
In game one, the Bulls fell to North Florida, 5-2. After falling behind, 1-0, Matheny singled through the right side to drive home Brianna Castro and knot the game at one run apiece in the bottom of the second inning.
The Osprey scored one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. Anna Aguon tried to ignite a rally with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as UNF held on for the 5-2 victory.
Aguon went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Bulls.
Action at the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament will conclude on Sunday morning when UB plays Florida A&M. First pitch is slated for 10 am.
