BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team led for all but 30 seconds as they cruised to a dominating 95-55 win over Niagara at Alumni Arena on Wednesday night.
Four Bulls scored in double figures led by junior guard Dyaisha Fair who had 26 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists. Freshman Georgia Woolley had a breakout performance as she scored a career-high 23 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc. Senior Jazmine Young scored in double figures for the third straight game with 14 points and Cheyenne McEvans added 12 points and six rebounds.
Niagara scored on the opening possession of the game, but it was all Buffalo from there as the Bulls used an 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back triples from Fair, to take an early 11-4 lead. Later, Fair got the steal and fastbreak bucket to put UB up 13-7 and force a Niagara timeout at the 5:44 mark. McEvans converted on a fastbreak basket out of the timeout to extend the UB lead and later, Fair knocked down a baseline jumper as the shot clock expired to give the Bulls a 19-9 lead at the end of the first.
After a back-and-forth start to the second quarter, the Purple Eagles scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to six at the 5:49 mark, but Woolley answered with a corner triple and later, Fair scored in transition and Summer Hemphill got a second chance jumper to go fall to give the Bulls a 32-21 lead at the 3:18 mark. The Bulls continued to attack as they used a 7-0 run, sparked by another Woolley triple and a McEvans second chance jumper, to go up 40-21 and they would lead 44-27 at the half.
Young hit a three on the first possession of the third quarter and the two teams would trade baskets from there before McEvans and Young scored on back-to-back possessions to give UB a 51-33 lead at the media timeout. Woolley continued to heat up as she went on a 5-0 run with a triple and a fastbreak layup to give UB a 56-33 lead and force a Niagara timeout at the 3:31 mark. Dominique Camp found Adebola Adeyeye on the block with a beautiful pass on UB's next possession and later, Fair scored on two straight trips down the floor to give the Bulls a 65-43 lead at the end of the third.
Buffalo began to pull away to start the fourth quarter as they used a 9-0 run in less than two minutes to take a 74-43 lead. Woolley continued to attack as she got a bucket plus the foul and later scored on a second chance layup to put the Bulls up 81-47. Young kept the offense clicking with a pair of buckets to give UB its largest lead of the game, 90-41, at the 4:09 mark and Buffalo would cruise to victory.
Hemphill scored six points and added eight rebounds while Nia Jordan and Ramatoulaye Keita provided valuable minutes off the bench, scoring five and three points, respectively.
The Bulls are now a perfect 54-0 over the last five-plus seasons when holding opponents to 59 points or less. Buffalo won the battle on the glass 52-40, including turning 19 offensive rebounds into 24 second chance points, while dominating the paint with 46 points in the lane. UB continued to turn defense into offense as they scored 25 points off Niagara turnovers while also scoring 32 fast break points.
"It's good to see everybody play and be happy and fly around," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "We have to tighten up the turnovers and have a better assist to turnover ratio, but we'll keep getting better. I love that other players are starting to step up with Georgia having a great game, Dyaisha doing her thing and Summer being the leader that she is. She doesn't have to score to lead. I'm so grateful that she came back for one more year and we are better because Summer is on our team."
Up next, Buffalo welcomes Rhode Island to Alumni Arena on Sunday, December 5. Tipoff is set for 2pm.
