
Bulls Drop Home Finale To Western Michigan

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team was unable to ride a first set victory as the Bulls fell to Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon, 3-1. UB will end the regular season on a three-match road trip beginning next weekend.
The Broncos took the contest 19-25, 30-28, 25-15, 25-21 as both teams hit at exceptionally high averages with WMU holding a .359 to .342 advantage. Buffalo had a 5-3 lead in the first set and never looked back as a kill from freshman Maria Futey opened a 17-11 advantage. WMU would pull within two late at 21-19, but the Bulls scored the final four points, capped off on a kill form Courtney Okwara to take the opening set. UB hit .448 in the opening set, including a perfect 1.000 from Futey, who had six kills on six swings.
The second set was tight as both teams had chances to come away with the win. Buffalo led 8-5 early as Western Michigan burned the quick timeout. Buffalo would go on to have a set point at 24-23, but a Western Michigan block kept the set alive. Buffalo then fought off three straight WMU set points, tying the contest at 27-27. UB had one more chance to take the set after that, but the Broncos scored the final three points to get on the board with the 30-28 win,
UB again hit over .400 in the second set with 22 kills and just four errors. However, after the intermission it was all Western Michigan as the Broncos dominated the third set and then held on to an early lead in the fourth to clinch the victory.
Five Bulls found themselves in double figures in kills as Futey and Stacia Gollogly had 15 each. The 15 kills tie a career high for Futey and set a new career best mark for Gollogly.
Milla Malik added 12 kills, while Emma Gielas finished with 11. Courtney Okwara had 10 kills and just one error as she hit .474 for the match.
Freshman setter Mandy Leigh chipped in three kills, to go along with 52 assists. She also led the Bulls with 16 digs.
Defensively, in addition to Leigh's digging total, Jenna Sonnenberg finished with 14 digs and Futey had 13. Malik added 11.
At the conclusion of the match, the Bulls honored their senior class that included Paige Beck, Kyndal Bacon, and Monika Simkova.
The Bulls head to Northern Illinois next weekend beginning with a 7pm match on Friday.
