PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team is headed for warmer weather as they travel to the Bahamas to take part in the inaugural Bad Boy Mowers Women's Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament at the Atlantis Resort, November 20-22.
The Bulls will open play against the top team in the country, the South Carolina Gamecocks. It is the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The Gamecocks defeated UB 79-63 in the Sweet 16 on March 24, 2018, at the Albany Times Union Center. UB's Summer Hemphill and South Carolina's Lele Grissett are the only members of either squad to have played in that game.
The 12-game, three-day tournament is regarded as one of the most challenging early-season tournaments. The field for the inaugural event has a total of 12 National Championships, 28 Final Four appearances and 43 Conference Championships. South Carolina (1), UConn (2), Oregon (9) and South Florida (23) are all ranked in the top-25 of the latest AP poll.
Buffalo is coming off a dominant 102-42 win over Canisius in the regular season opener on November 9. The 60-point victory is UB's largest in the Division 1 era. The Bulls showed their balance and depth as seven players scored in double figures, led by junior guard Dyaisha Fair who scored 16 points to go along with two assists and four steals. Redshirt fifth year forward Summer Hemphill recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Georgia Woolley showed her potential as she added 11 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
South Carolina earned the top spot in the AP poll for the second straight week and improved to 3-0 on the season with a 76-45 win over Clemson on Wednesday night. The Gamecocks return all 11 members of its 2021 NCAA Final Four team and added the No. 1 transfer of the season in Kamilla Cardoso and the No. 1 recruiting class. South Carolina is led offensively by Destanni Henderson who is averaging 15.0 points and 5.3 assists. Zia Cooke is also averaging in double figures at 13.3 points per game while Aliyah Boston is averaging 9.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 3.3 blocks per game.
