AKRON, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (17-11, 8-9 MAC) cruised to their fourth straight win, defeating Akron 76-61 at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday night.
Buffalo was led by freshman guard Dyaisha Fair who scored a game-high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior Theresa Onwuka added 16 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Adebola Adeyeye also scored in double-figures with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds.
"Great defensive team effort," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I love the way different players stepped up. Dyaisha did a great job in the first half offensively, Hanna maintained control of the offense and I love the way Ade played in the second half and how Keowa and Tessy really locked in throughout the entire game. Our young team is fighting hard to get better."
The two teams would trade baskets to start the game as the score would be tied at eight at the first media timeout. The Bulls would rip off a 9-0 run out of the media, including four straight points from Onwuka, to take a 17-8 lead at the 2:25 mark before back-to-back three's by the Zips cut the UB lead to 19-14 with just over a minute to play. The Bulls would close the quarter on a mini 4-0 run to take a 23-14 lead at the end of the first.
Akron opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to cut the UB lead to 23-19 at the 8:22 mark. Later, the Zips would cut it to four before Onwuka converted a pull up jumper in the lane and Hall floated a beautiful pass up court to Fair for the transition bucket to put the Bulls up 29-21 and force a Zips timeout at the 6:08 mark. The Zips would drill back-to-back three's to spark an 8-0 run to tie the game at 29 with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. Later, a Jordyn Dawson three would give the Zips their first lead since midway through the first quarter before Fair found Hamilton on the block for two to stop a three-plus minute UB scoring drought and cut the Zips lead to one but Akron would lay one in at the buzzer to take a 34-33 lead at the half.
Buffalo would open the third quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by a Hall three, to take a 40-36 lead at the 7:41 mark. Later, a Fair fastbreak bucket and a strong take by Onwuka would spark a 5-0 UB run and force a Zips timeout. The Bulls would extend their run to 11-0 on buckets from Fair and Onwuka to take a 51-38 lead with just under five minutes to play in the quarter. Later, with UB up 13, Fair lost her shoe on the drive but finished off glass for two and then on the final possession of the quarter, Fair split a pair of Zips defenders and found Adeyeye on the opposite block for the layup at the buzzer to give the Bulls a 61-46 lead at the end of the third.
The Bulls opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run, capped by an Adeyeye offensive rebound putback, to take a 69-48 lead at the 6:38 mark. The Zips would trim the UB lead to 12 but that would be as close as they would get as Fair answered with a big corner triple on the other end to give Buffalo a 74-58 lead at the 3:31 mark and that would be all they would need to secure the road victory.
Buffalo dominated the paint 44-30, while maintaining the 41-36 rebounding advantage, including a 16 offensive boards which UB turned into 19 second chance points. The Bulls also dominated in transition, scoring 20 fastbreak points and 18 points off of 15 Zips turnovers.
Buffalo concludes regular season play on Saturday, March 7, as they host Kent State on Senior Day at Alumni Arena at 2pm.
