KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell 74-62 at Western Michigan on Wednesday night at University Arena. The Bulls have now lost four straight games for the first time since the 2015-16 season, falling to 13-9 overall, 4-7 in league play.
Buffalo was led by senior Theresa Onwuka who scored 17 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Also scoring in double figures was sophomore Adebola Adeyeye who came up one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Fair knocked down a three from the top of the key on UB's first possession to spark a 5-2 Bulls run to start the game. The Broncos would then tie the game at five before the Bulls took advantage of a two-plus minute WMU scoring drought to take a 9-5 lead at the first media timeout. A Hanna Hall three out of the media would extend the UB lead to 14-8 but the Broncos would break through and close the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 19-16 lead at the end of the first.
Western Michigan opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run before Loren Christie knocked down a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to 24-18 at the 6:26 mark, but Kamrin Reed knocked down a three on the other end to put the Broncos up 27-18 and force a UB timeout. The Bulls responded with a 6-0 run out of the timeout on back-to-back three's by Hamilton and Onwuka to cut the WMU lead to 27-24 lead at the 4:04 mark. Later, Fair got the bucket and the foul to cut the lead back to 30-27 but the Buffalo offense would stall and the Broncos closed the half on a 9-0 run to go up 39-27 at the break. The Broncos tied a season-high with five made three's in the second quarter.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the third quarter, with the Broncos maintaining a 46-32 lead at the media timeout. Back-to-back Bulls' buckets would cut the WMU lead to 51-38 at the 2:51 mark but the Broncos responded with another big 12-4 run to close the quarter to take a 63-42 lead at the end of the third.
The Bulls rattled off a 6-0 run in just under two minutes to start the fourth quarter to cut the WMU lead to 63-48 and force a Broncos timeout. After the WMU lead ballooned to 19, Keowa Walters finished through contact to cut the lead back to 15 at the 5:13 mark and a three by Jessika Schiffer would bring UB within 12 late in the game but that would be as close as the Bulls would get as the Broncos sealed the victory.
The Broncos won the battle in the paint 26-22, scored 19 points off of 15 UB turnovers and went 13-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Buffalo returns home to open a two-game homestand, on Saturday, February 15, with a rematch against Ball State at Alumni Arena at 2pm.
