Bulls Fall Short in 61-55 Loss at VCU

RICHMOND, VA – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team went 1-of-10 from the floor over the final five minutes and thirty seconds as the Bulls fell at VCU 61-55 on Thursday evening at the Seigel Center.

VCU ended the game on a 13-2 run and took advantage of a Buffalo team that was whistled for 22 fouls, sending the Rams to the foul line 26 times, including in the pivotal final minute as four of the last six points of the game were scored from the charity stripe.

The Bulls scored first on a bucket from Dyaisha Fair but the Rams responded with a 9-0 run to take an early 9-2 lead. Buffalo would fight back and tie the game on a three from Fair at the first media timeout. The Rams continued to stay hot from beyond the arc as they used a 7-2 run to take a 16-11 lead at the 2:38 mark but the Bulls would close with a 5-0 run to cut the VCU lead to one at the end of the first.

After a slow start to the second quarter for both teams, Hanna Hall and Loren Christie connected on back-to-back triples to put the Bulls back on top 21-18 at the 7:52 mark. The Rams then broke off a 6-0 run, but Fair responded with back-to-back three's to put UB up 27-24 at the media timeout. Hall would heat up, draining a second chance three from the wing to cap a 9-0 UB run and give the Bulls a 30-24 lead and they would lead 30-27 at the half.

The two teams would trade baskets to start the third quarter and the game would be knotted at 36 at the media timeout. Fair would take over coming out of the media as she got her own rebound and drained a three from the wing to put UB up 41-38 and Jessika Schiffer dished out a beautiful dime to Adebola Adeyeye who finished on the block to give Buffalo a 43-40 lead at the end of three quarters of play.

The Bulls would turn defense into offense to start the fourth as Hall came up with the steal and found Fair up ahead for the easy lay in to give UB a 45-42 lead at the 7:57 mark. Fair would take advantage of a four minute Rams field goal drought, scoring five straight points to put the Bulls up 50-44 at the final media timeout with 4:44 to play, but the Rams took over from there, closing the game on a 13-2 run to secure the victory.

Fair was the lone Bull to score in double figures as she had a game-high 27 points to go along with nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. Hall and Christie recorded eight points each.

The Bulls will have a quick turnaround as they return to action on Sunday, December 6, at Big 4 foe Canisius. Tip off is set for 1pm at the Koessler Athletic Center.
