BUFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team opens the 2020-21 season on Wednesday afternoon with an exhibition against Mercyhurst at 1pm. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Josh Whetzel (color) announcing and broadcast on ESPN 1520 and TuneIn Radio where Matt Mattia will have the call.
The Bulls return nine scholarship players from last year's squad that won 19 games. Buffalo has now won 17+ games in seven straight seasons, a first for the Bulls since joining the MAC in 1998.
Returning from that squad is a core of five upperclassmen led by redshirt senior forward Summer Hemphill and senior guard Hanna Hall. Also returning are junior forwards Adebola Adeyeye, Keowa Walters and Zena Elias.
The Bulls also return a group of four sophomores led by Dyaisha Fair who put together one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in program history, earning MAC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-MAC honors, while finishing the season ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (22.0 ppg). Elea Gaba, Loren Christie and Jessika Schiffer will also look to take on a larger role this season after seeing significant playing time as freshmen.
Wednesday will also be the first time Bulls fans will get a look at two talented freshmen guards in Cheyenne McEvans and Sophia Ojhammar as well as Robert Morris transfer Ramatoulaye Keita.
Mercyhurst recorded an 8-20 overall record and an 8-14 mark in PSAC play last year. The Lakers are led by senior Emily Shopene who averaged 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds as well as a team best 3.3 assists per game a year ago.
Under current New York State guidelines fans are not permitted at Alumni Arena. Links for live stats, live video and a live audio stream on TuneIn are also available on UBBulls.com.
