BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo senior defensive end Malcolm Koonce has accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl, it was announced on Friday. Koonce will be just the fourth player in program history to play in the prestigious all-star game.
Koonce has a team-best four tackles for loss and three sacks through three games this season. He also ranks third on the team in tackles with 17.
The Peekskill, NY native is coming off a breakout season for the Bulls. In 2019, he led the Mid-American Conference in sacks with nine and added 11 tackles for loss en route to earning All-MAC First Team honors. He was also the Defensive MVP of the Bahamas Bowl after recording a pair of sacks and a forced fumble in UB's win over Charlotte.
Koonce will join Gerry Philbin (1964), Anthony Johnson (2019) and Tyree Jackson (2019) as just the fourth UB player to ever play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.
"I feel like my whole career I've been an underdog," Koonce said. "To finally get some recognition and respect feels good. But I know it's just the beginning and I need to keep working."
The 2021 Reese's Senior Bowl will be played on January 30 in Mobile, AL at the University of South Alabama's Hancock Whitney Stadium.
