BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams hosted the annual UB Stampede Invite at the Audubon Golf Course. The men's race was an 8k while the women's race was a 6k.
In the men's 8k race, the Bulls charged their way to victory as they had five runners in the top-six and seven in the top-10. Leading the charge for the Bulls was Caleb Covell with a time of 25:02.4. On his heels were teammates Cal Puskar (third place - 25:35.3), Scott Loforte (fourth place - 25:42.5), Christopher Nowak (fifth place - 25:58.7) and Ryan Buzby (sixth place - 25:59.3). Rounding out the top-10 was RJ Pleasants (ninth place - 26:08.9) and Louis Greco (10th place 26:10.6). Patrick Hazlitt finished in 11th place with a respectable time of 26:13.1.
Caleb Covell has won the UB Stampede Invite in back-to-back years. With his most recent time, Covell now has two top-three times in the all-time men's UB Stampede top-10 Buffalo performances.
"I trained really hard all summer, it was definitely really good," stated Covell. "We came into the race wanting to get the team win, which is always the ultimate goal."
In the women's 6k race, the Bulls stampeded their way to a victorious race as they had four runners finish in the top-10. To lead the stampede was freshman Alexia Hecico, who finished in second place with a time of 22:23.8. Finishing in sixth was Dana Lynch with a time of 22:54.8. Right behind her were her two teammates, Meghan LaTuso (seventh place – 22:55.7) and Riley Jones (eighth place – 23:13.2).
In her first UB Stampede Invite, freshman Alexia Hecico cracked into the all-time women's UB Stampede top-10 Buffalo performances.
"It's an amazing atmosphere and energy," stated Hecico. "You know you're not alone, you have your whole team behind you, cheering for you, running with you and for you."
Head coach Vicki Mitchell and associate head coach Todd Witzleben are pleased with the direction of both squads.
"We are in a really high level of training right now," stated associate coach Todd Witzleben. "So for us to come out here even though we came in with tired legs was great. It shows we are moving forward in the direction we want to. By the end of the season we want to be climbing the ladder in the conference championships. This is a big step forward for the program."
The Bulls next race is Friday, September 20 at 3:00 p.m. as they travel to Boston, MA for the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown.
