BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo cross country programs will open up their 2019 campaign on Friday evening as they head to Bowling Green, OH for the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener which will be held at Forest Creason Golf Course. The men's 5k race will begin at 5:30 pm with the women's 5k race to follow.
After the UB women posted a 12th place finish and the UB men placed fourth at the MAC Championships a season ago, a rebuilt roster will look to get the 2019 campaign opened up on the right foot this weekend.
Two days after being selected 10th in the USTFCCCA preseason poll for the NCAA Northeast Region, the men were selected to finish fifth in the MAC this season in the coaches' preseason poll as they return 14 letter winners and welcome four incoming freshman to the roster. The Bulls will be leaning heavily on the senior duo of Caleb Covell and William Hilbert as they closed out their 2018 seasons with impressive showings at the NCAA Northeast Regionals as they took home 20th and 21st place, respectively. The Bulls will also be looking for Christopher Nowak, Matthew Mercer, Thomas Flannery and Benjamin Cardamone to build off of their strong showings from 2018.
The four newcomers on the men's side that will be looking to make an early impact for the Bulls are Alex Hislop, Patrick McCann, Armani Merlino and RJ Pleasants.
On the women's side, the new look Bulls were selected to finish in 12th place in the preseason MAC Coaches' Poll as UB will be looking to replace some talented runners from a season ago. The Buffalo roster will feature eight returners and seven newcomers to the program.
The Bulls will be looking for strong seasons from senior Meghan LaTuso and sophomore Riley Jones as they closed out the 2018 season with strong showings at the MAC Championships. Sophomore Samantha Vetter looks for a strong opening to the season as junior Saroja Rao looks to create veteran depth on this young roster.
The women will be welcoming an influx of seven newcomers this season as Julia Auandt, Maxine Dupuis, Alexia Hecico, Dana Lynch, Marlee Shaffer, Hannah Sullivan and Grace Van Vessem each look to make a positive impact on the revamped Bulls' roster.
Buffalo will have a week off before their next event as they will welcome teams across the region for the UB Stampede Invite on Friday, September 13 at 11:00 am.
