
Bulls Edge Ryerson, 78-75, in Exhibition on Friday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team held on for a 78-75 win over Ryerson University in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena on Friday afternoon.
Buffalo was led by freshman Dyaisha Fair who scored 27 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. Senior Theresa Onwuka scored 18 points, while adding seven rebounds, two assists and seven steals and freshman Elea Gaba also got into double figures with 11 points and three rebounds.
The two teams traded baskets to start the game as the contest was knotted 11-11 at the first media timeout. The back-and-forth affair continued and Ryerson took a brief lead at the 1:39 mark before back-to-back buckets by Onwuka and Fair gave UB the 21-18 lead at the end of the first.
The Bulls opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 28-20 lead at the 6:50 mark. Ryerson responded with a 13-2 run to take a 33-30 lead with 3:38 to play in the quarter. The Rams would extend the run to 15-2 out of the media to take their largest lead of the game, 38-30, at the two minute mark. Buffalo battled back with a 5-0 run on buckets by Fair and Schiffer to cut the lead to three but Ryerson scored on a layup in the final seconds to take a 40-35 lead at the half.
The Bulls opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run on back-to-back steals and transition buckets by Onwuka to retake the lead 44-43 at the 8:21 mark and they would lead 49-48 at the media timeout. A Fair triple out of the media would give UB a 52-48 lead but Ryerson evened the game at 52 at the 3:16 mark. The Bulls would pull ahead for a narrow 56-55 lead at the end of the third.
UB 6-2 run to start on back-to-back buckets by Gaba and a triple by Hall to take a 63-57 lead at the 8:41 mark and force a Ryerson timeout. Gaba continued her hot play as she converted an and-one to put UB up 68-59 and the Bulls would lead 70-63 at the final media timeout and they would withstand a late charge by the Rams to hang on for the three point victory.
The Bulls shot just over 42% from the field and turned 25 Rams turnovers into 26 points while also scoring 20 fastbreak points and winning the battle in the paint, 48-30.
The Bulls will enjoy a week off for the holidays before returning to Alumni Arena on Sunday, December 29, to host Dartmouth in their non-conference finale at 2pm.
