Cross Country to Host NCAA Northeast Regionals on Friday

BUFFALO, NY β The University at Buffalo cross country teams will host the 2019 NCAA Northeast Cross Country Regionals this Friday at the Audubon Golf Course in Amherst, NY. The women's 6k race will start at 11 a.m. with the men's 10k race starting at noon.

The women's 6k race will feature 43 schools and 357 individual competitors. The Columbia Lions won the Ivy League Championship with 57 points. The Lions check in at 21 in the national poll and first in the Northeast Regional poll. Syracuse claimed fifth at the ACC Championships and is currently sitting second in the regional poll and 29th nationally. Another ACC school, Boston College finished seventh at the conference championships. They received seven votes in the most recent national poll and is currently third in the regional poll. Β

Rounding out the top-15 for the Northeast Region competing on Friday will be Providence, Harvard, Yale, New Hampshire, Iona, Boston University, Vermont, Cornell, Connecticut, Marist, Dartmouth and Army West Point.

For Buffalo, the women's team will take on the frozen tundra of the Audubon Golf Course first on Friday as they look to improve on their 28th placement a year ago. Leading the charge for the Bulls are Alexia Hecico and Meghan LaTuso. Hecico finished first for the Bulls in five of the six races she competed in this season. LaTuso has had a very consistent season as she has placed in the top-five for the Bulls in all five of her races this year. Making their NCAA Regional debut this Friday will be Maxine Dupuis, Alexia Hecico, Meghan LaTuso, Dana Lynch and Lily Meek. Returning to the snow-filled golf course will be Rachel Barich and Riley Jones.

The men's 10k race will feature 41 schools and 359 individual competitors. Coming off an impressive Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, the Iona Gaels won with a total score of 15 as they swept the top-five. Iona has now won 29 consecutive MAAC Championships. The Gaels are ranked first in the USTFCCCA Northeast Poll for the second straight week and ranked eighth nationally. Behind the Gaels is Syracuse. Syracuse checks in at 18th in the national poll and is coming of a win at the ACC Championships. The Orange won the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional just edging out Iona by 11 points.

For Buffalo, they will look to keep their fantastic season going. The men are fresh off a third place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Their third place finish was their best finish since the 2016 championships. The Bulls will look to improve on their NCAA Regionals placement as they finished in seventh place out of 34 schools a season ago. The team is led by Caleb Covell who has been the Bulls' first finisher is every race he's competed in this season. He is coming off a second place finish at the MAC Championships that earned him first team All-MAC honors. Covell will look to beat his time of 33:33.4 which was good for 20th place last year. William Hilbert is coming off a great MAC Championship as he finished in 11th place in a time of 25:51.5. Like Covell, Hilbert will look to beat his time of 33:36.8 and to finish higher than 21st on Friday afternoon. Also competing for the Bulls on Friday will be Ryan Buzby, Thomas Flannery, Scott Loforte, Armani Merlino, Christopher Nowak and Cal Puskar.
