BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo defensive end Taylor Riggins was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It marked the third time over the first six games a UB defensive player has earned the award.
Riggins tied a career high with two sacks against Ohio on Saturday. The junior defensive end also recovered a fumble forced by teammate Malcolm Koonce and the Bulls scored on a 34-yard touchdown the very next play. Riggins had five tackles in the game and also added a quarterback hurry.
Riggins has started all six games this season at defensive end for the Bulls. He has 19 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries on the year. The Bulls lead the MAC in total defense, allowing 315.5 yards per game.
It is the third time this season a UB player has won MAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors. Senior safety Joey Banks has won the award twice – following Buffalo's games against Penn State and Temple.
