BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team placed three student-athletes on the Academic All-MAC Team, the conference office announced on Friday morning. Included in the 75-member team is junior Megan Wernette and sophomores Scout McLerran and Hannah Watson.
Wernette was named to the Academic All-MAC squad for a second straight year as she has a 3.296 GPA in Business Administration. Wernette finished fourth on the team in kills with 173 and second on the team with 63 total blocks. She had 13 kills twice this season at Seton Hall and more recently in a five-set loss to Toledo. Wernette also recorded double figures in kills six times this year as she had 10 kills and just one error at Miami (OH) and finished with 11 and 12 kills, respectively, in back-to-back matches at Kent State and at Ohio.
UB's two sophomores made the team in their first year of eligibility, as freshmen are not included on the Academic All-MAC squad.
McLerran, who has a 3.659 GPA in biological sciences, finished the year with 1,127 assists, which are good for eighth in school history for assists in a season. Through just two years of action, McLerran is ninth in school history in career assists. This past season, she surpassed the 50-assist mark six different times as she helped lead the Bulls to their best ever record in conference play. McLerran had a career-high 65 assists in a five-set win over Appalachian State. She finished fourth on the team with 218 digs and third with 26 service aces.
Watson is an exercise science major with a 3.590 GPA. She finished fourth on the team in digs as she served as UB's primary defensive specialist, playing the three defensive back row positions. Watson recorded double figures in digs seven times this season, including 19 in UB's first ever win over a Big Ten program in Rutgers and added 15 in a 3-0 win at Kent State.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
