Impressive First Race for Rookie Bulls

HAMILTON, NY - The men's and women's cross country team traveled to Hamilton, NY today to compete in the annual Colgate Harry Lang Invitational. The teams were led by a core group of freshmen to help them finish 4th and 2nd respectively.
The men began the race at a controlled pace, which put them slightly behind the other teams. They hammered out the last mile, which was just enough to help them snatch the 4th place spot. In his first race as a Bull, freshman Caleb Covell was the first one to cross the finish line for Buffalo, completing the race in 21:27, enough for an 18th place finish. Not far behind him was junior, John McCarthy. McCarthy was able to sneak into a 21st place finish with a time of 25:35.40, only 1.3 seconds behind the 20th spot. Benjamin Cardamone, William Hilbert, and Kevin Hazelwood had a quality first run as Bulls, clocking in at 21:38.70, 21:39, and 21:40 respectively.
The women had a bit more success on the terrain, when they were able to take a 2nd place finish overall. The freshmen ran an aggressive race, and were able to seal two Top-10 finished. Stephanie Ward, 6th place, and Sylvia Russell, 8th place, were the first two Bulls to cross the finish line, clocking in at 18:04.30 and 18:21 respectively. In her Bulls debut, Juliana Basla was able to take a 16th place finish, completing the race in 18:59.90, just a few seconds before teammate, Charlotte Malloy, who took a 17th place finish with a time of 19:10.40. Freshman, Meghan LaTuso, also had an impressie first day as a Bull when she clocked in at 19:27.10, enough for a 19th place finish.
The Bulls are hoping to improve by the next meet, which is Friday, September 16th at their own UB Stampede.
