BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball camp scholarship program had a very successful first year in 2016. Thanks to the Buffalo community, 17 girls were awarded scholarships to participate at the UB women's hoops camp this summer, free of charge.
"I think that it is our duty to help young girls have the opportunity to dream and become phenomenal women," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "I grew up in the inner city of Syracuse New York and the two camps that I attended, Kathy Rush and Golden Valley Camps, I had to write a letter on why I think I should be allowed to attend their camps. Other kids just paid the fee but my single mother of five, could not afford to pay the cost of the camp. I went to those camps and became a top 40 player in the entire country! How many girls are out there hoping someone would give them a chance? How many girls want to be able to prove that they too can become? I am so fortunate that our community here in Buffalo is affording young girls this opportunity through my camp."
The UB women's basketball scholarship program was started this season by fifth-year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack and her staff. The 17 scholarships that were bought by the Buffalo community were for girls entering 2-9 grade at a cost of $130 per camper.
The 2016 Camp Scholarship program is being used as a tool to empower others in order to empower our community. The support from the Buffalo community allowed for 17 girls to attend summer basketball camp, an opportunity that might not have been available to them without the generous act of our community members.
The UB women's basketball camp was designed to give every girl the chance to dream, be inspired and grow through the game that we all love so much.
"Each one Reach one", is a quote I live by," stated Legette-Jack. "I want to thank our UB donors, our community businesses, and our University, for joining hands with our women's basketball team in helping these young girls dreams slowly become a reality. This is just the beginning."
