AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team was swept at Akron on Wednesday afternoon as the Bulls had a hard time solving Akron hurler Erin Seiler. The Zips won the first game of the double-dip 7-1 and the second game 5-0.
Due to a postponement last week between these two teams of games scheduled to be played in Buffalo, the Bulls were the designated home team in the first game of today's double header. Akron scored two in the top of the first off starter Brieanna Baker, but the Bulls got one back in the bottom of the first as junior Savanna Norcio led off with a triple and she came in to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Katie Weimer. The triple would be one of just two hits secured by UB in the game.
Akron added one run in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead. The Zips were also helped out by three Buffalo errors in the contest.
Baker picked up the loss as she allowed seven hits and three runs in 4.0 innings of work. In addition to Norcio's triple, UB's other hit came in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff single by freshman Courtney Gilbert.
Seiler also started the second game for the Zips and she blanked the Bulls in 7.0 innings of work. In the second game UB allowed four runs in the bottom of the second to give the Zips the early lead and they added one more in the sixth. Freshman Catrell Robertson singled for the Bulls in the top of the first and sophomore Danielle Lallos hit a leadoff single in the fifth for UB's two hits in the game.
Charlotte Miller was tagged with the loss in game two as she went the complete game and allowed seven hits and five runs, but just two of those were earned.
"I have to give credit to Akron's pitcher. She shut us down offensively and she showed us today why she was the Pitcher of the Year in the conference," said head coach Trena Peel. "Unfortunately, we didn't defend the ball well either. We had way too many mental errors on defense. We are going to keep learning from every game and bounce back for Bowling Green this weekend."
The Bulls will host their first conference series of the year this weekend when they welcome Bowling Green to town. The three-game series will begin on Friday with a single game beginning at 3:00 pm.
