BUFFALO, NY – Playing inside the friendly confines of Nan Harvey Field for just the second time this season, the University at Buffalo softball team put forth one of its most complete efforts of the season, defeating Bowling Green 9-0 in five innings. The win evened UB's record to 6-6 in MAC play.
The Bulls got another dominating performance in the circle from sophomore Charlotte Miller, who scattered just two hits over five innings, while striking out three and walking none. The Bulls got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second as sophomore Danielle Lallos opened the frame with an infield single. She advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kenzie Koch and came in to score on a single to left field by senior Lauren Gambone. The Bulls looked for more in the inning as they had the bases loaded with just one away, but couldn't further their lead.
UB loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third as the first three batters all reached base. Following a fielder's choice, Gambone drove in another run on a bases loaded walk and then junior Savanna Norcio hit a hard ball back up the middle to drive in two more and give UB the 4-0 lead.
With Miller cruising in the circle, the Bulls broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Catrell Robertson was hit by a pitch to open the frame and junior Ashton Earnhardt doubled to right center to put two in scoring position. Both came in to score on a double to left center from Lallos, who came in to score on a single to center by Koch. Freshman Courtney Gilbert drove in another run on an RBI groundout and Norcio drove in the ninth run on a single up the middle, scoring Gambone.
Miller retired the last nine batters in a row that she faced to pick up her fifth win of the season. Norcio went 3-for-3 on the afternoon with three runs batted in. She also drew a walk as she reached base all four times. Lallos also went 3-for-3 from the dish as she drove in two and scored three runs.
Earnhardt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Koch, Gambone and Gilbert each had a hit and drove in at least one run each.
"It was great to be at home! It the second time we've been home and the first in a conference series so we were amped up and ready to go," said head coach Trena Peel. "We are a great team and if everybody maximizes their greatness all at the same time then we are unstoppable. Today was the first time in a while that we put everything together."
The Bulls and Falcons will continue their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm at Nan Harvey Field.
