BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday as the Bulls fell 4-1 to Canisius in their first game this year at Nan Harvey Field.
Canisius got off to a quick start in the game as a three-run home run by Lindsey Silfer in the top of the first was all the offense that the Griffs would need. Canisius starter Erika Mackie kept the Bulls out of the hit column and off the board for most of the afternoon as UB recorded its first hit in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bulls got solid work in relief from freshman Ally Power, who went 5.0 innings and allowed just a single run in the top of the fifth. UB finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh as a single down the left field line by pinch hitter Catrell Robertson put runners on the corners with one away. Senior Lauren Gambone then singled to left field to drive in sophomore Leandra Jew. With the tying run at the plate, Essence Savinon gave the ball a good ride to right field, but it was caught and junior Savanna Norcio grounded out for the final out.
Freshman Lace Smith picked up the loss as she allowed three runs in two innings. Power stuck out five batters in relief and scattered four hits in five innings. UB managed just four hits, including two of those coming in the final inning. Junior Ashton Earnhardt and freshman Katie Weimer had the other two. Norcio had her 14-game hitting streak snapped.
"Canisius scored first and it took us seven innings to push a run across," said head coach Trena Peel. "Today we struggled to get our offense going and we never really caught the offensive momentum until the seventh. I'm proud of my girls for the fight that we showed throughout the game. We did some great things on defense to get out of some innings and I thought that Ally Power threw great in the circle. We will bounce back and be ready to go again tomorrow."
The Bulls and the Griffs will meet again tomorrow afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex with a 4pm first pitch.
